Here's a way of embarrassing the hell out of a student without having the others know.
Take their rough draft (that was written in 15 minutes), make many many copies, but be sure to exclude the student's name. Now, distribute these copies and have everyone scrutinize every little missing comma and point out all tense inconsistencies. Once people get to ask if a 5 year old wrote the paper, ask the class not to make the same mistakes this person did.
